About the Artist
Maria Staffeld b. 1997 is a multidisciplinary Dominican artist with a BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, Denver, Colorado. Staffeld’s work involves the use of semiotics throughout her dreamlike-satirical compositions.
Cats, both domestic and wild, reappear in my work alongside a young, female figure, unhinged by the expectations of societal norms. These characters are a reflection of quirks, boldness, and individuality.
The blobby structures and eccentric curvy creatures exist in a place I like to call Somewhere Nowhere; a state of mind where everything's odd but blissful. My practice has allowed me to balance out chaos and serenity.
[Chaos] mainly pertaining to the mix-match of patterns and [serenity] in the simplicity of form. I establish boundaries then break away using bright colors, swirls, mismatched patterns, and uncanny imagery.
